Below homeopathic remedies are commonly
used for different types of cough. However, you must consult your
health care practitioner before using them:
Aconite 30C has a short, dry cough and is
a major remedy for croup. There may be a feeling of suffocation. It
often arises from a changed to cold weather.
Antimonium tartaricum l2C has a cough
with rattling of mucus in the chest and difficult or no expectoration.
The person may also be very drowsy.
Bryonia 12C has a hard dry cough which
often brings on pain in the chest or head. The child wants to hold the
affected part. Any movement seems to aggravate the cough.
Drosera 30C has fits of coughing brought
on tickling in the larynx. The Drosera cough may lead to retching or be
associated with laryngitis. The cough is often better in the open air.
Drosera is a great medicine in whooping cough.
Hepar sulph 30C is a remedy which is used
in croupy cough brought on by the cold, dry air even in the form of a
slight draught or taking off the clothes in cold weather. The cough is
loose with wheezing and rattling or may be suffocative, forcing the
person to sit up and bend the head backward.
Spongia 30C is particularly useful when
the person rouses out of sleep with a suffocating feeling. There is
panting and difficult breathing. The cough is dry and is better for
eating and warm drinks.
Many other medicines may be indicated in cough, including Antimonium
crudum, Arsen-icum, Belladonna, Ferrum-phos, Gelsemium, Ipecac,
Mag-phos, Nux vomica, Phosphorus, Pulsatilla, Rhus-tox and Veratrum.
Dose: Three times daily for up to three days. Where this is a chronic
condition, it should be referred to your homoeopathic practitioner.
