How To Prevent And Manage Cough

There are certain foods or diets which should be avoided during cough as they are known to produce mucus:

  • Cheese

  • Soy Milk

  • Cow's milk

  • Roasted Peanuts

  • Bananas

  • Sugar

  • Butter

  • Cream

And more than one orange a week (actually orange is best to be avoided during cough) should be avoided during a cough or cold. If the person suffers from frequent coughs or colds, these foods should be avoided for three or four weeks and then introduced slowly back into her diet in small quantities. Make sure that the person is adequately dressed for the cold weather and does not get exposed to a cold wind or get easily chilled.

If you live in a cold climate it is best to keep your house relatively cool so that the transition from the hot to the cold weather does not shock the system too much.

Alternative Therapies For Cough

Natural medicines may be used, steam inhalations and chest rubs are also very useful. It is important to keep the chest wall moving and encourage breathing by getting the person (if she is not too sick) to do light physical exercise. Massage and vibration of the chest will help to loosen and remove mucus.
