Types Of Friendly Bacteria

There are many types of friendly bacteria, each has its own unique usefulness.  Briefly, some of the common types of friendly bacteria are as follows:

 

Lactobacillus Acidophilus

Most prominent in the small intestine

 

 

Bifidobacteria

Major inhabitant of the gastrointestinal tract.  The type of food given to an infant seems to determine the balance between these healthy bacteria and unhealthy bacteria.  Breastfed babies have a much higher level of healthy bacteria than bottle-fed babies.

 

Food to enhance Bifidobacteria are as follows:

  • Vegetables

  • Whole Grains

  • Fruits

  • Pulses

  • Yoghurt containing Lactobacillus Bulgaricus and Streptococcus Thermophilus

Things that disturb the amount of Bifidobacteria in infants and children are as follow:

  • Immunization

  • Antibiotics

  • Chronic Constipation

  • Diarrhea

  • Sudden changes in diet or weather

  • Some common infections

 

Lactobacillus Bulgaricus

Important yoghurt culture, not a ' natural' resident of the gastrointestinal tract but enhances both the above bacteria.

 

 

Streptococcus Thermophilus

Important yoghurt culture.  Both of these are used to make yoghurt, but are usually only present in very small quantities in commercially produced yoghurt.
